Do National Party Platforms Still Matter?

The choice we face in America comes down to two opposing principles which underlie the conservative and liberal philosophies. It matters that you understand them.

This past weekend, Michael Knowles gave a very insightful speech about the fundamental difference in principle between the conservative and the liberal philosophies. Please take the time listen to this 25 minute speech by Michael Knowles explaining the intrinsic coherence of the conservative and the liberal governing philosophy, and why there really isn’t much room to ‘meet in the middle’ between the two sharply opposed ideologies.  Hearing what really motivates liberals (it’s not altruism) is the key to understanding their destructive policies.

Knowles expresses why party platforms matter. Traditionally, party platforms articulated a clear and coherent statement of governing principles. It’s still true today, especially at the national level.

Listen to Michael Knowles speech:

The Republican and Democratic Party platforms present a clear ideological divide. The Republican Party platform ultimately reflects the moral order established by the natural law. The governing principle is that law is based on justice and charity: our rights and obligations come from God and are fixed in the moral order, and our laws promote man living harmoniously in a community.

The Democratic Party platform reflects a view that man is an autonomous being and that individual self-determination is paramount. From the DNC platform it follows that a person can premise their choices on individual preference untethered by natural law obligations. Law and politics become merely the products of activism springing from man’s will.

In the public debate, both conservatives and liberals hold positions that might appear to be contradictory, but which are actually coherent policy positions if you understand the underlying principles of conservatism (the Republican platform) and liberalism (the Democratic platform). For instance, the Republican Party platform opposes abortion (because it is the deliberate killing of innocent human life) and also supports the death penalty (because the criminal deserves the ultimate punishment for egregiously violating God’s law and the sanctity of human life).

Similarly, the Democratic Party supports abortion (the baby is not capable of self-determination and is hampering the autonomy of the mother) and opposes the death penalty (the criminal is still an autonomous individual whom society cannot kill — irregardless of the criminal abusing his autonomy in the commission of a crime. Hence, Democrats advocate for emptying the prisons and defunding the police.)

Thankfully, the Republican Party platform is still anchored in the principles of God, family and country, but it is under assault as more and more people in society today cannot articulate why our society has to be based on a moral order rooted in the natural law.  Keeping the conservative view of government at the forefront of public policy is one reason why it is so important to be involved in your local Republican Party. We must continue to advocate for a party platform and candidates who stand for public policies and laws that reflect the moral order established by God in the natural law.

DTR PAC will work to educate candidates on the principles of conservatism that bolster our freedoms, and only support candidates for office who advocate for conservative principles.

And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’
