What’s the difference between a Poll Worker and a Poll Watcher?

Poll workers (election workers) and election judges staff polling places on Election Day.  They are the citizens who help ensure the voting process goes smoothly.  Poll workers check in registered voters, answer questions and make sure that everyone who is eligible is given the opportunity to vote. Poll workers are part of the Election Day staff that help conduct an election.

Poll workers are usually paid for their service on Election Day by the local election authority, and often for attending training sessions prior to Election Day. Your local election authority determines how much you will be paid.
Each state recruits poll workers differently. Typically signing up to be a poll worker is done with your local election office – often that is the county board of elections. In some places, this is a county election office, but it may also be a registrar or clerk at the county or local level.

Poll watchers are not part of the Election Day staff but are representatives of political parties — poll watchers — who have been formally designated by a political party to observe the voting process to ensure the elections are conducted in a fair manner and that proper rules and procedures are followed. Poll watchers are credentialed to stand INSIDE the polls and observe the process in order to ensure the proper election procedures are being followed and attest to the election’s legitimacy.
